Mr. Jonathan Fuelling is a Biology teacher located at Heritage Jr/Sr High school who’s been teaching for 27 and a half years. He arrived at Heritage in 2004, and he has coached boys and girls varsity basketball. Fuelling not only is a great teacher, but he’s also a father and husband. He has three kids and a wife, as well as a dog named Timber who is 11 years old, and a cat named Walter who is two years old. Mr. Fuelling has just started teaching drivers training, and he loves to hunt and spend time outdoors.
GC, LF: Who inspired you to become a biology teacher?
F: My high school biology teacher Mr. Caley, because he made class fun! It was a class that I looked forward to. He explained patiently but with purpose. He was easy to talk to both in and out of class.
GC, LF: What's the best part of being a teacher?
F: Seeing kids get interested in learning, not memorizing, just learning.
GC, LF: What are your hobbies outside of school?
F: Spending time with family, spending time outdoors, deer hunting.
GC, LF: If you weren’t a teacher, what would you like to be?
F: A wildlife photographer.
GC, LF: What’s your favorite memory of your high school years?
F: Meeting my wife, because we dated in high school.
GC, LF: What’s your favorite part of the day?
F: The 45 minutes before school starts, where I can plan my day and when I’m driving into school and seeing the sun come up.
GC, LF: If you could be one animal for a day, what would you be and why?
F: An eagle. Because I hate flying in airplanes but if I could fly by myself, that would be really cool.
GC, LF: If you could change something in your past, what would you change?
F: I think probably to be a better listener when it comes to parents, teachers, my peers, to be a better listener. When you’re young you kinda do your own thing and take that for granted.
GC, LF: How does it feel having the responsibility of teaching students?
F: It is one of the toughest, mind bending, frustrating, rewarding things I have ever done in my entire life.
GC, LF: What is the most fun lab or project that you have done?
F: I really enjoy all of the dissections we do in zoology. Each animal is pretty unique which makes it tough to pick a favorite but the shark is maybe at the top of my list.
GC, LF: What is the worst part of being a teacher?
F: Trying to get students to care!
GC, LF: What legacy do you want to leave behind as a teacher?
F: I just hope that when kids look back on their high school years they might recall the conversation/ life lessons that trumped the science stuff.
GC, LF: What advice do you want to give the next generation of teachers?
F: Be patient and passionate, learn to take deep breaths, and know that you will make a difference in a lot of lives.
GC, LF: What would you like to say to all students?
F: That they don’t have to have it all figured out right now.
